Ecosystem

The following is a list of projects conducted at ISIR that deal with issues linked to those of the culture lab, in particular the development of hybrid artistic and scientific practices.

Cross-cutting theme within ISIR

The Culture Lab is a cross-cutting theme within ISIR, which means that the laboratory supports initiatives to organize events around the themes developed by this group. These initiatives include short artist residencies and seminars organized within the laboratory.

Microsoft Research AI & Society programme

We are part of the Microsoft Research AI & Society fellowship program. This program aims to catalyze research collaboration between Microsoft Research and scholars and experts across a range of disciplines core to discussions at the intersection of AI and its impact on society.

Our research challenge is « Towards Creative-Centered AI: Opportunities and Challenges at the Intersection of Creatives, AI, and Society.«

AI technologies are becoming more powerful at the same time as they are becoming more widespread and accessible. Their role in creative and cultural sectors, in turn, has become increasingly complex. On one hand, AI tools open new creative possibilities; on the other hand, the way they are built and deployed brings a range of potential harms, from economic impact on artistic labor to copyright violations. The intrusion of AI into the mainstream artistic sphere forces us to confront our vision of creativity itself.

ANR-funded project RENAISSANCE

Media synthesis describes the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to generate and manipulate data, most often to automate the creation of content (image, video, audio). Technological advances in this field are driving the use of AI algorithms in the creative industry, revolutionising the content creation process. Recently, algorithms for converting text into images have made spectacular progress and have been made available to the general public. It is now possible to generate, in a matter of seconds, an image corresponding to a text description provided, which has considerable implications for the creative industry. Video is the most versatile and effective medium for conveying information. Therefore, the ability to create a video from text would be a new step in the AI creative revolution.

As part of the RENAISSANCE project, we will be working on the creation of algorithms for converting text into video for creative applications. Our consortium is made up of Obvious, a trio of world-renowned artists working with artificial intelligence to create works of art with a strong research background, and MLIA, a major player in the development of deep learning in France studying computer vision and natural language processing. This unique combination of an artistic collective
